One of the most ancient and historic cities in Israel, and frequently overlooked by tourists, is the city of Beit She’an. Located in the Northern area of Israel by Galilee, this is the location where the Jordan Valley and Harod Valley meet and is one of the country’s biggest archaeological sites. The ancient town was settled some 6,000 years ago and has been inhabited continually since then. Excavation of several areas has revealed over 20 layers of remains left over from ancient civilizations. It is mentioned multiple times in the Bible and is most famous for being the location that King Saul was hung from the city walls. The city remained a major metropolis through the reigns of King Solomon and King David.
Today, the biggest attraction in Beit She’an is the Archaeological National Park. Tourists fly and drive to see the history of Israel through the remains from each historical period. The items excavated have been reconstructed to create a clear picture of what the city would have looked like years ago. Visitors can see public baths, a Roman temple, artisan workshops, stores, and other structures.
